A Valentine's thank you

We are happy to share with you this lovely handmade card presented to us by a current detainee to tell us how they feel. It’s good to see how much they appreciate what we do and how amazing it is that people can still be kind in adversity.

Hunger strike at Yarl's Wood

Some 120 of the women at the Centre began to refuse food in protest against their treatment and conditions, boycotting the dining services at scheduled meal times. Befrienders have also reported that some women are boycotting other services and activities in the centre, such as the library and IT room. Some women have been told by the Home Office that they may be removed more quickly because they are refusing food.

Major funding news!

After working hard on our application since mid-2016, we are very pleased to tell you that we have been awarded a Big Lottery Fund Reaching Communities Grant. This gives us the financial security to plan the next three years, and to recruit another paid member of staff for the office.

…998 …999 …

We are celebrating our 1000th visitor to the Thursday drop-in – quite an achievement in a little over 10 months. This has far exceeded our expectations and we are looking forward to adding a second session in the future.

We offer befriending support to people held in Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre, aiming to reduce their isolation, reinforce their self-esteem and affirm their human dignity.
