Become a Befriender
Our mission statement sums up what our aims are as a charity – ‘We visit those held in Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre, aiming to affirm human dignity and restore self esteem by listening and offering befriending support.’
- Are you a good listener?
- Can you listen with empathy without taking on board someone else’s suffering?
- Are you able to remain non-judgemental?
- Can you commit to a regular one hour weekly visit (plus travel and queuing time)
- Can you give us at least 6 months of volunteering?
The women in Yarl’s Wood are detained indefinitely and our befrienders will visit them until they leave the centre, which could be over a year.
If you would like to know more, we run regular information sessions at our office at 43 Bromham Road, Bedford, MK40 2AA, from 7pm until 8.30pm. Our next session will take place on:
- Wednesday 11th October 2017
For those who wish to volunteer, we run a full day training and selection day (from 10am to 4pm). We are currently updating and planning your training needs and will add session dates in the new year. Please bear with us and keep an eye on this page. Thank you for your interest – and patience.
We are still trying to recruit people who can speak any of the following languages:
Albanian Amharic Arabic Farsi Hindi Lingala Mandarin Polish Russian Spanish Tigrinya Urdu Vietnamese
If you speak any of the languages listed above, or other languages, or you know someone who does, then can you please email us on email@example.com.
Provide Office Support
If you don’t think visiting is for you, there may be other ways you can help out. As with any other charity, we have limited resources, and rely on the support of volunteers to provide their skills and their time. We have a spare desk in our office and have volunteers regularly working along side us. Please get in touch by phone or email and let us know how you’d like to help.
If you are not local to Bedford, there may be an Immigration Removal Centre near you where you can get involved. Check out the AVID website to find your nearest one.
For more information, please call us on 01234 272090.
Donations of suitcases and other small gifts are always very gratefully received. Please get in touch to arrange drop off or we may be able to collect them.
We have a small fund to support destitute women when they leave Yarl’s Wood, whether they’re being released into temporary accommodation or being returned to their country of origin. We rely on personal donations and fundraising activities to keep this topped up, so if you’d like to make a donation or you’re thinking of holding a fundraising event, please get in touch via our Contact Us page.
